How long have you been affiliated with Make-A-Wish and in what capacity?
I have not been with Make-A-Wish for very long. I started my training in May and jumped in almost immediately. I have a passion for this organization and what is does. I do several wishes a month and sometimes up to 4 in a weekend.
What is your favorite wish story or experience with Make-A-Wish?
So far it’s been meeting the kids and getting to see how excited they get about explaining their wishes to you. For the first time in their lives this is something they actually have a say in. They didn’t get to choose their illness or the treatments, but their wish is their decision.
In what way have you seen the impact a wish can have on a child?
Some children are done with treatment and some are at the end of their lives.  Regardless it provides them with an opportunity they haven’t been given, and they are able to focus on the moment. They are so happy to be getting their wishes granted. The kids love it and the families are so grateful to see the end of a terrible journey end with exactly what their child wished for.
How would you describe your volunteer experience? Or what would you say to someone who is thinking about being a volunteer?
Do it, go for it! You get out of this what you put into it. If you only have time for one wish every few months or several wishes in a month, then great! At the end of the day, you helped just a kid get their much deserved wish. After all these kids have been through they honestly deserve a million wishes. I have LOVED this volunteer experience with Make-A-Wish and would tell anyone not volunteering currently to hurry up and jump on board! There is a kid waiting on you!
If you could have one wish, what would it be?
More funding to go to childhood cancer research. Only 4% of government funds for cancer research go to childhood cancer research. Children are losing their battles every day. No family should ever be told that there is nothing left to do. A cure needs to be found and more money needs to be spent on childhood cancer. These children are our future.
