Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers participate by bringing together kids, teens and books.
Our staff LOVES to read, and we always get a kick out of granting book-inspired wishes. Here are a few of our favorite literary-themed wishes.
Bethany’s Anne of Green Gables Wish
Bethany dressed as everyone's favorite Anne with an "e"
One of Bethany’s favorite pastimes is reading. She has always been captivated by the Anne of Green Gables book series authored by Lucy Maud Montgomery. In 2013, Bethany, then 14, and her family flew to Prince Edward Island, the setting for the novels. There she visited the gorgeous National Park and walked around Avonlea Village. Bethany relived her favorite stories by touring the Anne of Green Gables Museum and attended the musical version of the stories complete with backstage passes.
Clementine’s Harry Potter Wish Reveal at the Nashville Public Library
Clementine is ready for Hogwarts.
Clementine and her dad started working their way through the Harry Potter series before her wish was granted. When she chose her wish, she wanted to have fun at the Florida theme parks, including The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. The Nashville Public Library helped host Clementine’s wish announcement and brought Hogwarts to Nashville. She even received a handmade book from the librarians.
Alby the Pirate Treasure Hunter
Alby and the book that inspired his wish
When Alby was in the hospital, fighting two critical illnesses, his favorite book to read was How I Became a Pirate. The book allowed him a mental escape from the walls of the hospital. He was able to dream about what it would be like to be a pirate, hunting for treasure and riding the open ocean. When it came time to choose his wish, Alby wanted to go somewhere warm and sunny with his family. He spent a week in the Caribbean with his parents and siblings. The locals took Alby’s wish very seriously! They dressed as pirates, had sword fights on the beach, and helped Alby use his treasure map to find a buried treasure. Before they left the island, Alby’s family visited the National Park. Park rangers who had seen local news coverage of Alby’s wish actually gave him How I Became a Pirate as a gift without knowing the book had inspired his wish!
