Antonio was just a typical teenage boy who loved all things sports and played wide receiver on his schools football team. All of that changed when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and began treatments that limited him from doing what he loved most. That didn’t stop Antonio from cheering on his favorite teams and players.
When Antonio met with his wish volunteers, it was clear that his one true wish was to meet his favorite NFL player, Odell Beckham Jr. of the New York Giants. Odell Beckham Jr. has been Antonio’s favorite player ever since he became a part of the NFL. Antonio thinks he is the best wide receiver. He loves Beckham’s so much he even got the style himself. He was so focused on going to New York the whole time he was going through treatments, it gave him something to look forward to. In December 2016, Antonio and his family flew to New Jersey where his wish began.
After exploring the city, Antonio got to watch the New York Giants in their practice facilities doing what they do best! He even got to take a tour of the locker room and meet the team. Antonio and Odell Beckham Jr. sat down to have a conversation about football…and their matching hair. He gave Antonio the practice football then the coach called them over to tell the whole team about Antonio’s journey and how this was his wish. Antonio said that seeing them practice and where they kept all of their equipment “blew his mind.”
Antonio spent game day at MetLife Stadium, in the VIP box, watching the Giants take on the Lions in what turned out to be a great game. He received the first touchdown football after the first quarter and the touchdowns just kept on coming! Maybe he was a good luck charm because the Giants won, 17-6. But the most special moment happened before the game even started, Odell Beckham Jr. pulled Antonio between him and Victor Cruz for the National Anthem.
It was a memorable experience for Antonio and his family to bring to life watching NFL football. Surely meeting his favorite team and players will be something Antonio will never forget. Maybe one day we will see him in the NFL.
